If you have had a nurse, doctor, nurse practitioner, physician assistant or any other healthcare provider who has made a difference in your life, take the time to let them know. Thanking your healthcare heroesĭuring National Nurses Week and Hospital Week, find creative ways to thank the healthcare workers in your life. In 1990, we celebrated the first National Nurses Week, May 6-12, to overlap with Hospital Week. Florence Nightingale, often recognized as the mother of modern nursing, opened the first secular nursing school in the world in 1860. The timing of Hospital Week coincides with Florence Nightingale’s birthday. In 1953, National Hospital Day was turned into National Hospital Week. It may be interesting to know that Hospital Week itself has its roots in a pandemic! The first National Hospital Day was established in 1921 as a way to encourage community members to support hospitals after the Spanish flu outbreak in 1918. This year, Hospital Week takes place at a time when our country and world is beginning to emerge from a pandemic. During National Hospital Week, May 9-15, consider how you can show your support for our healthcare heroes. For many, the last year has highlighted the critical importance of our healthcare workers. National Hospital Week is an annual opportunity to thank and celebrate healthcare workers. Share personal stories using the hashtag #hospitalweek. Hospitals can display posters and banners as individuals add filters to their social media profiles. Respect and appreciation should be loud and clear. A new fridge in the break room, a couple more electronic vital sign machines, and maybe an additional bladder scanner (gasp!) support staff in doing their jobs to the best of their ability. National Hospital Week is a great time to make improvements to hospital equipment and processes. There’s nothing more fun than watching hospital administrators plunge into cold water at the dunking booth! A “carnival day” with outdoor games and free food for employees and their families makes a big statement. Hospitals can offer free t-shirts to wear on a dedicated day and bring around free snacks to the units to show heartfelt appreciation. Prizes, raffles, and contests throughout the week give staff a break from their endless tasks. A hospital “spirit week” promotes engagement in a fun way to boost morale. Healthcare systems, managers, and other corporations and individuals can honor healthcare workers in a number of ways. ![]()
